PHQ drives fuel truck in Iraq

Megan Dehl, a PHQ from Bethel 57, Pocatello, ID, was a convoy truck driver and refueling specialist in the 2nd Platoon, 1016th Quartermaster Company, US Army.

She helped run a fuel point for both helicopters and trucks as well as doing security for convoys. She was in Iraq for 18 months.

The sun is just coming up and in the distance you see the silhouette of a Blackhawk flying her way. Grabbing her head gear, she heads out with her comrades to the flight line. As the chopper lands and the pilot waves them forward, all she can hear is the sound of those blades spinning above her head as the heat from the engine blows in her face. As she hooks up the nozzle to the chopper, she signals to start fueling. After a couple of minutes, the pilot signals to her that he is full and to stop fueling. She runs out from under the blades of the bird. The Blackhawk takes off and she heads back to the trailer with a feeling of accomplishment. That is one of the many jobs that Megan, as a soldier of the 1016th Quartermaster Company do everyday, as well as carrying a weapon that weighs 112 lbs.

Megan says "Jobs Daughters help me be assertive when I needed to be, and not be afraid to speak in front of people".

Noted Author, PBG & PHQ

Kim Williams Justesen is a Salt Lake City native who now lives in Sandy, Utah. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from Westminster College, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing for Children from Vermont College.

For 12 years, Kim worked in public relations and advertising, including jobs with local advertising agencies and television stations. She even spent four years as the Public Information Officer for the Utah Division of Comprehensive Emergency Management (try saying that 5 times fast!). She has written t.v. and radio ads, video scripts, brochures, newsletters, press releases, fund raising letters. But her first love was always writing books.

Her first book, "Love and Loathing" was published in 1998. That was followed by many magazine and internet articles, and a project for Klutz Publishing (part of the Klutz Kwiz for Kids series). After time off to get the Master's Degree, she had three books in a series released in 2005. The "Hey, Ranger" books are based on actual questions asked by tourists who visit America's national parks each year. In 2006 "My Brother the Dog" came out and has grown in popularity since its release. A new novel called "Infinite Blue" will be released in 2008.

Kim is married to Mike Justesen, and they have three teen-agers, which explains the twitch in her left eye. When she is not writing, Kim teaches English, Literature, and Humanities classes at Utah Career College. And if she’s not doing that, she’s knitting or crocheting, or looking for chocolate to eat.

Kim is a Past Honored Queen of Bethel #7, Salt Lake City, and a Past Bethel Guardian of Bethel #16, Midvale, Utah. She is also active in Eastern Star, currently serving as Associate Matron for Radiant Chapter #12. Her oldest daughter, Morgan, is a two-time PHQ in Bethel #16, and her youngest daughter, Amanda, is a member of Bethel #7. Son Ryan is a member of R.W. Moore Chapter, DeMolay.

Her latest books are;

Tanglewood Press - Terra Haute, IN

“Hey, Ranger!” Kids Ask Questions About Grand Canyon National Park
